R.I.P. MobilePC / Mobile Magazine

I was doing my weekly preparation for the Otaku Generation podcast when I decided that I wanted to see if there was a link I could send people to over on Mobile Magazine’s website (Mobile used to be called MobilePC Magazine). I went there, and simply got the ol’ “403 Forbidden” and “You don’t have permission to access / on this server.”

Mobile Magazine Forbidden Screen-Shot

Well, that’s not good. I figured I’d head over to the Future Networks (Mobile Magazine’s publisher) website to see if there was a back-door to the Mobile Magazine site. Lo and behold, there are a few references to Mobile Magazine on their site, but it seems that none of those links work. I begin to grow suspicious as I the links to Subscriptions and Customer Service are broken. I decide to head to the link that says “Publications” and Mobile Magazine is not one of the publications that is listed.

Hmm. That’s strange.

I call the subscription services center, and tell the lady that the Mobile Magazine site appears to be down. As a “concerned citizen” and avid reader of Mobile Magazine, I thought it my civic duty to report such an outage. She initially tells me that she’ll report it to the team that handles such things, asks me to hold on while she “checks something”. About 30 seconds later, she gets back on the phone and says “We regret to inform you that Mobile Magazine has ceased publication as of the November issue”. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I love that magazine!!! ARGH!!! Now what?! There’s no other magazine, in my opinion, that even came close to the gadget coverage that Mobile Magazine offered. The rep continued, “I hadn’t realized that they already took the site down, so that’s why I didn’t say anything originally”.

Turns out that the subscriptions are going to be converted to MaximumPC subscriptions. We’ll see how much I like that magazine.

It’s a sad, sad day. 🙁

Yea, that was a great magazine. I noticed it was missing from Barnes and Noble….. It sucks, I loved that “Straight outta Tokyo” section. There’s really no replacement for it!

Hahah, it’s been “in the pipeline” for quite some time. I’m not sure how Kevin found it? I never published any links, etc.
